Checking In At The Legislature:
August 2020

I hope that you and your families are successfully navigating these difficult and challenging times. I know that we are all doing our best to meet the challenges we each face.  I am continuing to work hard on positive legislation that will be beneficial for our families and communities. The Legislature will also have a special session later this week to vote on where to deploy Federal “Cares Act” money in Utah and to address and make any necessary changes to ongoing COVID related matters.

On a personal note, during this time of quarantine, I have had the opportunity to record a classical music album- see details at the end of the newsletter to know where to download or view the concerts.

The General Election is less than 11 weeks away. I am on the ballot this fall and need your support! If you would like to host a sign, donate, or volunteer in another way, please click below to be part of my campaign.

With school returning at the end of this month, the question is often posed: “Who’s in charge of the decisions and policies for reopening schools?”

Parents, students, and teachers have been concerned about the parameters of returning to school. The decision for returning to school has been determined by each school district and charter school as well as parameters for in-person or virtual attendance. This is NOT the decision of the governor or the legislature. Under Executive authority in our “State of Emergency” the governor mandated masks for all k-12 and higher ed students. The State School Board of Education (in consultation with the State Health Department) has determined specific health practices and policy recommendations for reopening k-12 schools. Here’s a short article about health practices recommended for schools to follow. Higher Education has also consulted with the Board of Regents to determine safety policies for all universities and colleges and what should be determined by each entity. They are making those decisions.

Chamber of Commerce Business Champion 2020

I was pleased that my work in the legislature was recognized by the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. As a recipient of the 2020 Business Champion award, I remain committed to working with business leaders in our community to ensure that we will have a strong economy so Utahns can thrive.

Census

Please go to https://census2020.utah.gov/ if you haven’t completed your census yet.

Utah is ranked #1 in the country for economic recovery and outlook.

“Sound tax policy and eliminating excessive government regulations continue to stand strong and true in improving states’ competitiveness, and we hope these states’ stories serve as a guide as we navigate the economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.” To read an article discussing how Utah is in a good position to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, click here

The album “David Park plays Fritz Kreisler” was produced by Centaur Records and is available in all major music outlets like iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, Amazon, etc. We recently performed on two Facebook Live events found here. We also performed on YouTube, where I also played Claire de Lune by Debussy.
