Checking In At The Legislature:
Summer 2021 Update
|
|
Recovering from COVID was a long-haul experience for me. I’m finally getting my energy back. I’ve been busy all summer on issues that affect Utah’s quality of living, including cleaning our air.
The census showed which voting districts need more or fewer constituents. You are invited to share your ideas and draw your maps starting early September. Watch for the website to upload the maps at https://redistricting.utah.gov/. The legislature will consider all of the ideas in October and vote on them in a November special session.
I’ve made a video summarizing some of the legislation I’ve sponsored to help make government spending more efficient and accountable in Utah. You can view the video here.

Air quality: 5 things to share
1. ALEC Podcast and presentation: I was asked to present the work being done in Utah for the rollout of hydrogen production and applications. Listen to the PODCAST here. I presented Utah legislation to legislators around the country at the national ALEC conference in SLC.
2. Lancer Energy is a UTAH company focused on building the first hydrogen refueling station near the airport in 2022. They have local, national, and international partners helping to transition heavy-duty trucks and other applications to hydrogen. Hydrogen engines are quiet and have zero emissions.

4. Chevron refinery in North Salt Lake announced a new clean and the extremely safe process they are now using at this facility. It has been a successful project that will now be taken to Chevron refineries worldwide. I love great things made in Utah! 60% of their petroleum produced in Utah stays in Utah.

With Lt Governor Diedre Henderson, who touted the two top leaders in this project are women- Blair Blackwell and Mitra Kashanchi. County Commissioner Lorene Miner Kamalu, Bon Stevenson, County Commissioner Randy B. Elliott, Des Barker, Todd Bingham, Rikki Hrenco-Browning, and Byron Russell.

|
5. Fire mitigation in Utah: breathing California smoke is a problem for all of us. What is Utah doing to mitigate fires? I had the opportunity to see wildfire mitigation in Fish Lake National Forest in Utah with Governor Cox, legislators, county commissioners, and mayors. Utah saves millions of dollars by thinning out trees and removing fallen timber to prevent fires and support wildlife.

Thank you to our First Responders from NSL!
I was fortunate to join our North Salt Lake first responders on a ride-along. Thank you, Utah State Trooper Cody Ohlau (and Lieutenant Wade Breur), and thanks to our newly retired North Salt Lake officer T.J. DeCarlo for your years of service to our community.

July 23rd proclaimed President M. Russell Ballard Day.
Governor Cox declared July 23rd President M. Russell Ballard Day due to his deep devotion to preserving our pioneer heritage in Utah. This includes his vision to expand This is Place Heritage Park, the new rodeo arena at the state fairgrounds for the Days of ’47 Rodeo, and his tireless effort to bring leaders together from multiple faiths. It was touching to be able to participate in the governor’s declaration.

Meeting Afghanistan’s 1st female Ambassador to the USA
Afghanistan’s first female Ambassador to the USA Roya Romani (center in pic) speaks to the world about the importance of US troops for 20 years in Afghanistan.
In the link, she shares how it changed her life and the life of her people- especially the women. She thanks America for making a difference. 70% of the country is young and has only lived under US occupation. The tragedy taking place there is a shock to us all.
I’m proud of my brother-in-law Hal Murdock, for being the commanding officer over the first flight squadron that dropped bombs over Afghanistan in Oct 2001 after 9/11. He’s one of the thousands who have served in Afghanistan and devoted their lives to the cause of freedom.

Ribbon cutting for the University of Utah Ken Garff Red Zone
Ribbon-cutting ceremony for the UofU Ken Garff Red Zone! I even got a pic with UofU football Coach McBride, Coach Kyle Whittingham, and Pres Taylor Randall. It will be a great asset to our state and the U. Thanks, Speaker Brad Wilson, for being there. The home locker rooms are stunning! The away team locker rooms, not so much which have a big sign that says, “Welcome to 5,000 feet.”
