July 2025 with Rep. Melissa Ballard

CHECKING IN AT THE LEGISLATURE:
JULY 2025

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As we honor the 175th anniversary of the pioneers entering the Salt Lake Valley, we celebrate their fortitude in the face of adversity, determination to live a land free from tyranny and persecution, and dedication to God, Family, and Country.  We honor the decades of building a territory and state supporting freedom of religion and thought, lawful and organized, and welcoming to people arriving from nations from around the world.

My family and I have very deep roots in Utah who have served our communities in various ways, and thank the many today and those who came before us who strive to protect a land of opportunity and freedom.

May we never forget the sacrifices of those who have gone before and those who continue to build the great state of Utah.

Deadly Blind Spot Closed by SB74
During the 2025 Legislative Session, I was the House sponsor on SB74, Corrections Modifications, which, among many provisions, requires the drug testing results for an individual on probation or parole to be reported to their supervising officer.

I appreciate the work of Wendy Halloran and Jim Spiewak, who brought this blind spot in the law to light. They did exceptional investigative reporting that helped to identify the need for legislative action. We appreciate their work showing how legislators can make impactful changes to improve the safety on our streets.
HB192 for the 2025-26 School Year
Thank you to Nadine Wimmer for helping me highlight 2024 HB192, requiring parental and postpartum leave for K-12 teachers and staff, as well as allowing LEAs to develop leave-sharing policies.

Policies like these will help us support and retain teachers, especially during events like illnesses, pregnancy, and parental leave. I'm excited to see the positive effect this bill will have for our teachers!

Stay tuned for the full story next month.
Running Club a Success for Utah Inmates

Celebrating the first of its kind in an Utah Correctional facility, the Fit From Within running club brought inmates from all backgrounds and housing units for its first half marathon. I was thrilled to cheer them on and even see them take turns pushing an inmate in a wheelchair who recently completed chemotherapy.

Taking on the Cost of Insulin

Levemir, the long-acting insulin most commonly approved for use during pregnancy, has been removed from the U.S. market. Alison Smart, president of the Alliance to Protect Insulin Choice and NSL resident, is working to bring a biosimilar version of this insulin to market.

Over the past year and a half, she has traveled frequently to Washington, D.C. to engage with Senate and Congressional offices. More recently, she has met twice with the Department of Health and Human Services as she works to secure continued access to this insulin, which was used by over one million people in the U.S. just a few years ago.

Celebrating the 5000th Broadcast of the Tabernacle Choir
The longest-running broadcast in the United States is "Music & the Spoken Word," a religious radio and television program that has been airing weekly since July 15, 1929, featuring the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir and inspirational messages. It was an historic broadcast that has deep Utah roots!
