Checking in at the Legislature: October 2024

CHECKING IN AT THE LEGISLATURE:
OCTOBER 2024

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

With the 2024 election right around the corner, ballots will be arriving next week! Be sure to check your voter registration in Davis County, and sign up for updates on the status of your ballot by phone, email, or text message.

We have made dozens of changes in the Utah Legislature 2022-2024 to secure the privacy and validity of ballots being counted. Take a moment to read the included documents to see how much work we've done to make sure your vote is counted, including regular audits and high standards of accountability.

In this issue, you'll find news about Utah's landmark lawsuit over BLM land, water donations for the Great Salt Lake, and a reminder to get out to vote!

Warmest regards,

Melissa

Stand for Our Land

Utah is pushing back against the federal overreach on our public lands. Currently, the Bureau of Land Management controls nearly 70% of Utah lands, including 18.5 million acres of “unappropriated” lands. For context, the federal government controls less than 1% of the land in states like New York and Connecticut.

Their upcoming plans for more road closures and restrictions threaten Utah’s economy and our ability to manage lands for wildlife, hunting, wildfire protection, grazing, tourism, and recreation.

Let’s keep Utah lands managed by those who know them best: Utahns. Learn more at standforourland.utah.gov.

Good News for the Great Salt Lake

The Great Salt Lake is a vital resource for our state. Recently, the Legislature has made significant strides to protect the Great Salt Lake for future generations. Both private citizens and companies are contributing as well. For instance, Compass Minerals has donated a water right of 200,000 acre-feet—enough to fill 99,000 Olympic pools annually. Additionally, the Jordan River Valley Conservancy has released another 10,000 acre-feet in the past month.

Remember to Vote!

Your voice matters! Elections will take place Tuesday, November 5th and ballots will be mailed out starting Tuesday, October 15th. Click here to check your voter registration and find polling places or ballot drop boxes near you.
